Cuba in a Cup: Cubita Coffee and Stogies

Ground coffee beans.

Cubita is one of the finest coffees in all of Cuba; you cannot turn a corner in Cuba without smelling a brew!

Cubita coffee is cultivated in the spectacular Sierra Maestra and Sierra del Escambray mountains, far flung away from affecting local fauna and flora. The coffee plant fertilises the soil, leaving it enriched with nutrients. The roots go down deep into the bed and prevent erosion, while mature mountain trees shade the plants from harsh UV rays and frost. No fertilisers or pesticides are used in the cultivation process, providing a completely natural, delicious bean. When ready, the beans are hand-picked and dried in the Cuban sunshine.

For over two centuries the demands of Cuban farmers have been tasting and selecting a variety of coffee for consumption, searching far and wide for the perfect flavour until they finally refined the Cubita.

Sitting on the porch on a summer’s evening, eyes closed with a cup of Cubita matched with an excellent cigar, and you could be right back on Playa Guanabo; all you need is the sand.

Cubita is a coffee to savour; it has a precise dryness of roast that provides an aromatic reminder of Cuba. When the packet is opened, it has a clean, fresh bean smell, but once you grind the beans, this all changes. The senses are indulged with a dark, smoked coffee aroma that will demonstrate why it is the perfect accompaniment to a quality Cuban stogie.

The coffee is great at any time of the day or night. It grinds smoothly, and the texture is a lot finer than usual Cuban beans. The cup is not too dark but still perfect for an espresso, tastes smooth when black and velvety when milk is added. The cup holds a lightly smoked flavour, without that bitter aftertaste that can develop during the roast. It manages to maintain a strong character without being too overpowering or heading towards the ‘dirty’ end of the spectrum.

As mentioned earlier, it suits a cigar perfectly; selecting the perfect cigar is ultimately down to you, so trust your senses as an aficionado. Our simplest advice would be to match similarities in tastes between the two. If you have a mild, slightly sweet cigar, then pair up with a mild fruity coffee, but for Cubita – which is a dark roast – lean towards a darker, peppery cigar.
