Highlights From The Festival Del Habano

festival del habano

Festival Del Habano was particularly special this year, as it is hosted in the same year as the 500th anniversary of Havana. In 2019, the focus was placed on three exciting brands; Trinidad, Hoyo de Monterrey and San Cristóbal de La Habana. We take a look at some of the highlights of this year’s festival, including new releases that were announced.

This year, the brand is celebrating 50 years in the cigar industry, so to mark this special occasion, five different cigar releases have been announced for the brand. Three such cigars will be added to the regular productions released by Trinidad, while the other two are exclusive releases.

Joining the permanent collection are the Trinidad Media Luna (4 ½ x 50), Trinidad Esmeralda (5 7/10 x 53) and the Trinidad Topes (4 11/12 x 56). Each of these cigars features the signature pigtail cap that Trinidad cigars are renowned for. The Media Luna and Esmeralda cigars are new vitolas for the brand; however, the Topes has shown up before in the Trinidad collection, as an Edición Limitada in 2016. Due to its popularity during its original limited run, it has been added to the regular collection offerings from Trinidad.

As well as this, the brand has been selected as this years Colección Habanos release, and for this, they will be bringing out the Trinidad Casilda (7 2/7 x 53). The Colección Habanos is known for being one of the pricier collection options from Habanos, but with each set of cigars presented in a box that looks like a book, they certainly do make a great collectable item for cigar fans. This will become the second time that Trinidad has been the chosen brand for the Colección Habanos following their Torre Iznaga (6 7/10 x 52) release in 2006.

Finally, the brand will also be releasing a special anniversary cigar, the Trinidad 50 Aniversario, to celebrate their 50 years in the cigar industry. Measuring 6 1/10 x 59, this cigar will be the first non-parejo size for the brand. The cigar will only be available in the exclusive humidors, which house 50 of these celebratory smokes. Only 100 of these humidors will be available in a limited release, with the first being offered at the annual humidor auction at the end of the festival.

San Cristóbal de La Habana

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of Havana, San Cristóbal de La Habana announced the exclusive production of the San Cristóbal de La Habana 1519 cigars to commemorate this impressive milestone! The cigars are 57 ring gauge x 170mm long and are being released in a limited run of 500 humidors, again to symbolise the 500 years of Havana. The San Cristóbal brand has been selected as one of this year’s featured cigar producers as they are celebrating their own anniversary this year, having opened twenty years ago! To celebrate their own special moment, the San Cristóbal de La Habana 20 Aniversario (52 x 162mm) will be an exclusive production for specialist stores.

Hoyo de Monterrey

Big news for fans of Hoyo de Monterrey, as it was announced that the brand would be the latest to release a Gran Reserva. The Gran Reserva label signifies a premium cigar, with only five other cigars in the Gran Reserva program so far. These prized cigars are sought after by collectors as the longer ageing time for the tobacco used and the limited quantities released makes them rare and pricey. The latest Gran Reserva will be the Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona Gran Reserva Cosecha 2013. The cigar is expected to be released in late 2019 or early 2020, and we are sure that cigar collectors will be eagerly counting down the days until then.

More New Releases

There were plenty of other new cigar releases announced at the 2019 Festival Del Habanos, including:

  • Cohiba Novedosos (50 x 156mm)
  • 2019 Limited Edition: Montecristo Supremos (55 ring gauge x 130 mm)
  • 2019 Limited Edition: Allones No. 2 by Ramón Allones (52 ring gauge x 140 mm)
  • 2019 Limited Edition: Quai D’Orsay Senadores (48 ring gauge x 157 mm)
  • Short de Punch (50 ring gauge x 120 mm)

For those lucky enough to be in attendance at the festival, it isn’t all about being the first to hear news of upcoming releases! The festival also offers a full five-day programme of events and activities that provide cigar lovers with a great insight into the origin and production of cigars, with trips to plantations and factories.
