Aside from rum being simply delicious to drink, it also pairs incredibly well with cigars, with the sweet, dark and rich notes of a fine aged rum balancing out the spicy, warming notes of a stogie perfectly.
Below you will find five of our favourite rums that are currently in our drinks cabinet at Havana House.
This is a fabulous Venezuelan dark golden rum, distilled from molasses in a copper pot still before being aged for 12 years in white oak barrels which results in a rum with a deep amber colour, sweet and fruity tasting notes and a super smooth finish. The Diplomatico won the Gold Medal at the 2007 Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition and is excellent value for money.
Coming in a beautiful decanter-style bottle, this rum is complex in flavour and depth, which is due to the ageing process. The rum is first aged in former bourbon casks before being moved to the home of Plantation’s owner, the famed cognac producer Pierre Ferrand, where they are then aged for a second time in smaller French oak casks.
This rum is a delight to the senses, boasting such flavours as flambéed bananas, toasted coconut shavings, cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as juicy cherries, vanilla and toffee on the nose. On the palate, you’ll experience flavours of dark chocolate, oak, pepper and spice.
Who doesn’t want a bottle of rum with frogs on?! Aside from looking unique, this is a delicious rum to add your cabinet.
It’s distilled in copper stills before being aged for six years in tropical climates. This climate gives the rum a tropical-themed tasting profile, boasting notes of citrus fruit, sugar cane, green banana and exotic fruit… a perfect match for any stogie.
Another Diplomatico rum makes our list and for a good reason; their 2001 single vintage rum is an exceptional drink that has been aged for 12 years in bourbon and single malt whisky casks before being finished in sherry wood.
Boasting tempting aromas of sweet pastry, baked bananas and cinnamon, along with richer notes of fruit cake, roasted almonds and treacle toffee, this rum has a silk soft mouth feel, and should only be enjoyed neat or on the rocks.
Arguably the finest rum ever made and without a doubt the most decorated rum to grace our drinks cabinet, the Havana Club Máximo Extra Añejo is the ultimate ultra-premium beverage.
Constructed by Maestro Ronero Don José Navarro, Máximo comes in a beautiful handmade crystal decanter and once opened, it reveals an outstandingly rich, intense and persistent, yet delicate aroma.
Our drinks expert was lucky enough to sample it where they described it as;
