Must-Read Books for the Modern-Day Gentleman

Man reads a book with a mug of coffee.

Got a few, rare moments to yourself? Why not settle down on a comfy armchair with some fine Monte Cristo cigars and dive into some of the greatest books every modern-day gentleman should read? We have compiled a list of five of our favourites that you should make a point of reading.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

For anyone who has tried, and failed, to get their first love will appreciate reading this book. Set in America in the roaring 20s, the narrative follows Nick Carraway as he retells the story of a great man who reinvents himself in the desperate attempt to be with the woman he loves, with shocking consequences.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey

Some may recognise this title from the hit-movie of the same name, developed from this book. The narrative follows the tale of a paranoid schizophrenic who is detained in an asylum. The book confronts some serious issues, such as racial conflicts, sexual repression and the treatment of the mentally ill. Interestingly, this fascinating book was born from Kesey’s experimentation with LSD.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

The Road is the story of a man and his son who intend to travel south to avoid the upcoming winter in a dangerous and rather hopeless, post-apocalyptic world. The narrative, full of heartbreak and tension, is ultimately the story of a father’s love for his son.

1984 by George Orwell

Perhaps one of the greatest writers to ever live, George Orwell offers readers a glimpse into a dystopian world that demonstrates how the world could turn if governments began to censor and control our entire lives. A perfect read for anyone interested in politics and a thought-provoking piece that makes you become observant of the world and what is happening.

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People by Toby Young

A funny look at trying to take the next step up the career ladder; the relatable, but hilariously over exaggerated story follows a journalist who tries to penetrate the celeb circle of New York. Expect several laughs and some truly awkward scenarios.

These are just five of the best books you should read. All of these books offer the modern-day gentleman with valuable insight and lessons to apply to their own lives, packaged in worlds so far detached from our own.
