Cigar punch cutters are becoming increasingly popular amongst cigar lovers, and for good reason. If you’ve always used a traditional guillotine-style cigar cutter, you need to experience the difference when using a cigar punch.

Difference Between Cigar Punch or Cutter

Traditional cigar cutters are sometimes referred to as straight or guillotine cutters. With these, you simply place the cap into the cutter’s hole and it is taken off straight.

A cigar punch, on the other hand, uses a twisted cutting function to create a smaller hole in the cap, rather than cutting most of the cap off. Cigar punches are sometimes called bullet cutters because of the circular hole they create, as well as the fact that many punch cutters are shaped like bullets.

Due to the different incisions, smoking through a cigar punch hole is a different experience from a normal cut. A punch cutter creates a smaller hole, leading to a hotter, more concentrated draw, which is great for aficionados wanting a more intense flavour from their cigar.

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to cutting your cigar – many prefer the cooler, easier draw of a traditional cutter. However, if you like strong flavours, we would recommend trying a punch cutter.

It’s worth mentioning that certain figurado shapes, such as torpedoes and belicosos, won’t work with cigar punch cutters due to the shape of their caps.

Choosing a Cigar Punch

The main consideration when it comes to cigar punch cutters is their size and making sure it’s not too big for the cigar you’re smoking. If you smoke large cigars like Churchills, you can punch multiple times to get a big enough hole if required.

However, if you smoke smaller sizes, like robustos or cigarillos, you’ll want to make sure your punch cutter isn’t too big.

Beyond that, you’ll want to choose a punch cutter that looks great. Many of them are small and can be carried key keyrings, so consider something that suits your style.
