Samuel Gawith Cabbie’s Mixture Tobacco
Samuel Gawith Cabbie’s Mixture Tobacco is a Virginia and perique twist hand rolled, then hand sliced. A sweet natural Virginia taste takes centre stage when lit with the perique, giving a spicy undertone to the flavour.
Samuel Gawith’s Cabbie’s Mixture is a beautiful roll cut of finest Virginia with 6% Louisiana Perique woven into the middle. Roll cut tobaccos are produced by spinning tobacco leaves into long ropes, which are also called twists. These twists are further enhanced by pressing and cooking, which allows the flavours of the leaves to mingle, mellow and develop together. Once the rope is ready, after a long and elegant process, it is sliced into convenient discs that are also known as roll cuts. To prepare for smoking, a little rubbing of the coils will loosen the tobacco, which can then be packed into a pipe.
This traditional style of tobacco contains no additional flavourings. What you get though is a rich flavourful experience of sweetness from the Virginia and fruitiness from the Perique. No additional flavouring necessary!
As you open the tin, the aromas that greet you are fresh and comforting. There’s almost a new leather pleasantness here, with gentle fruity fragrance and the familiar brightness of Virginia. You see coils of contrasting golden browns and dark browns, swirling in a whirlpool with eddies of yellow causing turbulence, captivating the eye. You take a pinch and from first light to last puff, Cabbie’s Mixture drives you to pleasurable gustatory landmarks.
The select Virginias have a sweetness about them that’s gentle, grassy hay, almost wheaty or oaty. The Perique gives dark fruit tones to the blend. Raisin, plum, prune and black cherry. As you continue to smoke and enjoy these flavours they caramelise towards the end of the bowl, giving a deeper sweetness that’s a little more subtle than before, with cocoa hints and a faint roasted nuttiness.
Cabbie’s Mixture is a delight that burns long and cool. Being mild on the tongue and palate, its flavours gently percolate the sense of taste. It would make an ideal postprandial treat, or serve as an all day smoke. This tobacco is a perfect candidate to be aged, though it is very agreeable straight from a new tin.
