Are Dunhill Pipes Today As Good As They Used To Be?

The Dunhill name is synonymous with high-quality pipes. The founder of the brand, Alfred Dunhill, passed away many years ago and, although he initially handed his company to his son, it has since moved out of family hands.

Dunhill – or The White Spot, as the brand is now known – has persevered, however, and still produces high-quality pipes to this day.

But some people question whether the Dunhill pipes available to buy today are as good as they were in the days when Alfred Dunhill headed up the business.

Before we explore the answer to that question, let’s first look at the Dunhill brand and why it became so well known for the quality of its pipes in the first place.

What makes Dunhill pipes popular?

Alfred Dunhill started his entrepreneurial journey as a tobacconist, with his first shop opening in 1907. During this period, most small tobacconists would sell pipes from independent makers.

Quality was highly variable and Alfred believed that the quality of the pipes he was purchasing to sell to his customers was not high enough. That’s why, in 1910, he set up a small workshop and began fashioning his own pipes.

Just two years later, Alfred launched his pipe featuring a white spot, which has since become synonymous with the brand but which was originally designed to show smokers how to reposition the hand-cut mouthpiece on their Dunhill pipe.

It is now an instant marker of a quality smoking pipe and is used on Dunhill pipes to this day. One of the main unique selling points of the Dunhill brand is that the pipes are crafted in Britain and meticulously checked for quality before making it to retailers.

This is still the case in 2026. Even though manufacturing processes across the majority of industries have moved to other countries around the world, Dunhill pipes are produced in a workshop in London.

Being handcrafted in Britain is one of the reasons why these pipes command a minimum of a three-figure price tag for their standard pipes.

And some of the collector’s and limited editions sell for four or even five figures, such as the exquisite Dunhill White Spot Bulldog Gold Pipe Limited Edition!

This particular pipe was produced to celebrate the British bulldog and has a realistic gold bulldog windshield fitted to the bowl. It also comes with a matching bulldog puppy pipe tamper, which is made from gold and briar, just as the pipe itself is.

What makes these pipes so collectable is that only ten were made, so when we say they are a limited edition, we really do mean it.

Why are Dunhill pipes so expensive?

Aside from the fact that they are made in Britain, another reason for their price tag is the quality of the materials that are used in their manufacture. Only the finest briar wood is used to make Alfred Dunhill pipes, with the factory said to reject many briars.

Because they are handmade, they have excellent mechanics, with every element of the pipe having been carefully handworked to the exacting Dunhill standards.

The grain quality in particular sets Dunhill The White Spot pipes apart, which means they look every bit as good as they smoke.

These pipes are made to last a lifetime – and they do when they are taken care of properly. In fact, they last so well that there is a thriving market for old Dunhill pipes that have lasted generations and still offer an exceptional smoking experience.

So, if you are interested in a Dunhill The White Spot pipe, consider this an investment rather than a cost. This is especially the case if you know you enjoy smoking a pipe and want to have one of the most stylish and well-made options on the market.

For example, an Alfred Dunhill The White Spot Shell Briar Pipe Group 4 Shape 4103, Billiard, with a price tage of under £500 could be a good starting point if you are new to Dunhill pipes.

This is one of the most popular Alfred Dunhill The White Spot pipes we stock because it is such a good all-round pipe that delivers a cool, consistent smoke.

In an article from 1997, PipeSMOKE Magazine detailed how the then-chairman of the business Richard Dunhill would grade the pipes produced in the London workshop, with only the finest given the highest designation and therefore the highest price tag.

Are older Dunhill pipes better quality?

There is certainly a degree of romance and nostalgia attached to older models of Dunhill pipes and we can’t argue with that. However, whether older pipes are better quality than those being made by the Alfred Dunhill The White Spot brand today is up for debate.

One aspect that it is worth considering is that, as pipe smokers, we are often creatures of habit. That means we become attached to the way in which we smoke our own pipes.

Each pipe, depending on the shape of the bowl and the length of the stem, will smoke slightly differently. The amount of tobacco you use, the type of tobacco and how you pack your pipe will also have an impact on your smoking experience.

Our point is that this makes whether a pipe is a “good” smoke very subjective. One person may love the way their new Alfred Dunhill The White Spot pipe smokes, while another may prefer an older version that has been passed down through their family.

Often what we value the most is the ritual of our smoke, which encompasses every element from choosing our tobacco, packing our pipe, charring the tobacco, tamping it and then, of course, lighting and smoking our pipe.

So, perhaps it is better to ask what kind of pipe you want to smoke, and how you want to smoke it. Whatever your thoughts on Alfred Dunhill The White Spot pipes, there is no disputing the craftsmanship that goes into them.

Their designs are incredibly varied too, which means there truly is a Dunhill pipe out there for every smoker. Take a look at a few variations to see for yourself.
