Tips for Creating a Cigar Collection

A selection of cigars lined up

After discovering a love for cigars, you may wish to start growing a collection. Whether this is a collection you intend to smoke at a later date, age over a number of years or keep as a collectible, there are many things to consider when deciding what cigars to purchase.

Here we share some tips on how to get started with collecting cigars.

Firstly though, before you start buying cigars, you should ensure you have a decent humidor set up for them to ensure that they are kept in the best condition and do not develop issues that will damage their burn, flavour or smokability. Work Out What You Like (And What You Don’t)

There’s no use investing in a bunch of cigars if you don’t actually like them, so before you start buying any cigars in bulk, discover what it is you like about these smokes.

Each time you try a new cigar, make a record of its tasting notes, the brand of the cigar, the vitola, where the tobacco originates and your opinion of it. You might begin to notice patterns in the type of cigars you enjoy.

For example, it may become obvious you prefer medium-bodied smokes from Nicaragua, and find full-bodied cigars too intense for you. You would then be able to find cigars similar to the ones you like, while avoiding buying ones that you won’t enjoy smoking.

You can think of it a bit like buying wine – if you know you like rich, high tannin reds from Argentina, then you probably wouldn’t choose to buy a crisp and zesty Pinot Gris from France. Of course, there will be the odd exception, but if you’re looking to find cigars you like, this is the easiest way to do it!

Try Sampler Packs

If you’re wondering how to discover what kind of cigars you like, then the best place to start is with a sampler pack. These will be collections of a range of different cigars sold by a cigar merchant that allow you to try some diverse flavours from a selection of brands.

Here at Havana House, we have a number of cigar selections to choose from.

Getting a Good Mix

When building a cigar collection, you’ll want to choose a mix of cigars for different occasions. You probably wouldn’t smoke the same cigar on your birthday as you would while running errands, so keep this in mind. Find cheaper, shorter smokes for a quick puff on the patio or longer, premium cigars for those moments when you want to sit and relax with some quality tobacco.

Get some special smokes for occasions like anniversaries, weddings, promotions and birthdays. Also, consider the time of day – do you want to have a milder smoke in the morning or a sweet, after-dinner smoke?

What Is Your Budget?

If you’re trying to fill up a humidor, you’ll need to have a number in mind for what you’re willing to spend.

Cigars aren’t always the cheapest, but when you consider that the average cigar contains as much tobacco as a whole pack of cigarettes, then paying £10 for a decent cigar doesn’t seem too unreasonable. And given that premium cigars are hand-rolled using expertly developed tobaccos, the price points of more expensive cigars also become more understandable.

Just because something is more expensive doesn’t mean it’s the best, though – there are plenty of affordable smokes that are wonderful!

Find Some Giveaway Cigars

With your cigar collection growing, knowledge of your love for cigars will be out for the world to know! Don’t be surprised if your mates start asking to pilfer a stogie from you to try. You probably won’t want to give up your limited edition premium smokes, so make sure you’ve got a few budget-friendly smokes you don’t mind parting with in your humidor.

Buying Boxes

If you find a cigar you love, then you may want to consider purchasing a full box of them rather than single stogies. With a box of cigars, you have the potential to play around with ageing.

Leaving your box of cigars in a humidor to age can help your cigars to develop intriguing complexities of flavour. If you have a box of 20, you could try one or two when you first buy them and then one or two each year to see how they develop over time. Keep notes to compare and discover how long an ageing process you enjoy for these cigars.

Consider Rare Cigars

If you’d like your cigar stash to be more of a formal collection, then you can consider purchasing rare and vintage cigars, which are often limited editions, out of production smokes or collections sold in one-of-a-kind humidors.

Budding collectors may want these as an investment piece, or just as something pretty to show off, but there are many options for those wanting a cigar collection. At Havana House, we have rare cigars and humidors for sale, ranging from £30 to £70,000! Your collector’s budget is completely up to you.
