Legendary cigar czar and head of Villiger Söhne AG Heinrich Villiger has stepped down from his role of CEO after leading the company for the past 65 years with Robert Suter set to take over. That’s not to say Heinrich Villiger will step away entirely, as he will remain chairman of Villiger Söhne AG and Villiger Holding.

Villiger was founded in 1888 by Heinrich Villiger’s grandfather, although it was Villiger who established a joint venture that would allow the company to import Cuban cigars into Germany, Poland, Austria and Switzerland. The company made its name through its top quality machine made cigars with sales reaching one and a half billion annually around the world. However it wasn’t until 2008 that the company branched out to hand made Dominican cigars and distributed them under its U.S. and premium cigar subsidiary, Villiger Cigars North America (VCNA).

Heinrich Villiger’s decision to step down comes shortly after Villiger Cigars North America underwent restructuring, which included a relocation of its headquarters from North Carolina to Miami and the appointing of Rene Castaneda as new president.
