Davidoff Winston Churchill Cigars

If you were to ask anyone, even non-aficionados, to name a famous lover of cigars, the majority of them will say Churchill. Equally, if you were to ask the public who is the greatest prime minister of all time, they will say Churchill. Sir Winston Churchill is one of the most fondly remembered figureheads of the world and rightly so.

In honour of the infamous cigar smoker, Davidoff have innovated a fantastic range of cigars that are full of character – just as the man was himself. The Davidoff Winston Churchill series has been flying off the shelves even though we have barely started selling them! Here are our thoughts on the vitolas of the new Davidoff line.

The Commander Cigar – Toro

Churchill’s greatest idle was Napoleon Bonapart. This is were he draws upon his inspiration. His military career was not an easy one. He was rejected from Sandhurst twice. He was captured as a prisoner of war after he eventually made it into the military. Churchill did make mistakes, such as continuing with the push of naval forces to attempt to take Constantinople in WW1, which resulted in failure. Overall, however, Churchill can be accredited with the defeat of the Fascist Axis, which is an accomplishment that will stand the test of time.

The Toro Cigar is the perfect vitola to reflect Churchill’s formidable character and influence on the battlefield. The Toro carries the largest ring gauge in the Davidoff Winston Churchill range. It is a grand cigar, from the first spiciness of the leathery notes through to the sweet influences of the Mexican Corojo wrapper. A colossus of a cigar in every sense of the word.

The Aristocrat Cigar – Churchill

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born the nephew to the Duke of Marlborough. He was an aristocrat and such grew a taste for the finer things in life. When fighting on the front line in Cuba he fell in love with Cigars. When on a mission in India he discovered Polo and became the best in his regiment. Whilst in private education he found his love for language, in particular the English texts.

The Aristocrat cigar is, appropriately, a cigar in the Churchill format. The 92 rated vitola is the flagship of the Davidoff Winston Churchill line. Using Ecuadorian wrapper and binder tobaccos from the Dominican and Nicaragua, this is a beautifully complex cigar. An oily cigar so much so that it is smooth to touch like satin. An almond oak creaminess that you simply must try.

The Traveller Cigar – Belicoso

Churchill had a love for exploration. During his career in the military and in journalism he found himself scoping the globe. Cuba. India, Sudan, South Africa, Germany, Egypt the list goes on. This would be a grand list of adventures in the modern days but at the beginning of the 20th century a man who has seen so much of the world was a marvel.

The Traveller cigar well reflects Churchill’s adventurism. This is a Belicoso that would certainly fulfil his taste for exotic tobacco. The cigar is inspired by Churchills love of adventure and so features tobacco from all around the world, but mainly from the Dominican Republic. This is a short an intense cigar. Full of flavour and power.

The Artist Cigar – Petit Corona

The artist behind the imposing character is a side to Churchill that has remained undiscovered to most people. When he wasn’t at the war table or devising diplomatic strategies, Churchill loved to paint. He would sit in front of his canvas, brush in one hand, cigar in the other whilst he swished his brush completing his latest landscape painting.

The artist cigar is strong yet very delicate in flavour to well represent Churchill – the artist. Very British notes of pepper and oakwood make this cigar feel Churchillian. If you ever find yourself admiring one of Churchill’s pieces, be sure to honour him with this cigar.

The Raconteur Cigar – Petit Panatella

If any man could tell a story, it would be Sir Winston Churchill. The man had a way with words, he could captivate the most intelligent and modest minds in the room all at once. Of course, it is easier to tell a tale when you have so many exiting adventures under your belt. Churchill’s favourite was the time that he single-handedly escaped imprisonment from the Boer army and made it 280 miles across Africa to the safety of the Portuguese base. All without a map and surviving on a diet of Chocolate and dirty river water.

The Petit Panetella blended to celebrate Churchill’s ability to captivate audiences as he told tales, weaved words and spoke stories. Each anecdote or speech would intermingle creating intrigue, similar to the variety of complex flavours in this cigar. The taste starts with notes of spice and liquorice with an earthiness to it, but then there is an advancement in flavour to reveal a plot of floral and herby notes.

The Statesman Cigar – Robusto

By far Churchill’s greatest achievement, and what he will be remembered by, is his statesmanship. He was the greatest of all time. A man of the people and a natural leader, a diplomat and a fine military strategist, a humanitarian and a politician. It was not ideology that made Churchill a great leader of the country as he flip-flopped between his opinions of liberalism and conservatism. What made Churchill great was a genuine love for his fellow people.

The Davidoff Winston Churchill Robusto is beautiful. Not just on the tongue but on the eye. This Robusto cigar reflects the complexity of Churchill, created with tobacco from the Dominican, Nicaragua, Mexico and Ecuador to produce a fine oily, silky cigar with the perfect balance of leather and coffee flavours.
