Highland whisky represents one of the most iconic and diverse whisky regions in Scotland. Known for its rich history, varied landscapes, and diverse distilleries, Highland whisky offers an array of flavours that appeal to both new drinkers and seasoned connoisseurs alike.
From peaty, smoky expressions to lighter, fruitier options, the Highlands provide a broad spectrum of whisky styles, each showcasing the unique characteristics of the region.
The production methods of Scotch whisky are protected by law – everything called Scotch must be made in Scotland and aged in oak casks for no less than three years.
Within the scope of Scotch whisky, there are five recognised regions of production which are recognised for producing unique taste profiles: Lowland, Highland, Speyside, Campbeltown and Islay.
Highland is the largest whisky-producing region in terms of geography, covering most of Scotland north of Glasgow. Highlands includes many of Scotland’s islands, although many whisky aficionados class these as their own region.
Because the Highlands is such a large area of land, the whiskies produced here can still vary due to geography and local farming and ageing practices. That being said, there are some general things you can expect from most Highland whiskies.
Many Highland Scotch whiskies tend to be heavy and full-bodied. Historically, this was because they were aged in smaller casks due to smaller malt harvests further north in Scotland. There also tends to be a distinct sweetness, fruitiness and maltiness to Highland whiskies, particularly those produced in northern and coastal distilleries.
Highland whiskies produced to the south can have a lighter body and a dryness more commonly found in lowland whiskies. Meanwhile, Highland whiskies produced on the islands can have more experimental flavours with a bigger emphasis on the peat.
