What are Speyside Whiskies?
Scotch whisky, the most popular style of whisky worldwide, has certain characteristics that are enshrined in law. To be called a Scotch whisky, it must be made in Scotland using just water, yeast and cereals (often malt), and must be matured in oak casks for at least three years.
Due to its natural ingredients and the unique craft of whisky production, regional taste varieties have formed across Scotland, each offering a distinct whisky experience.
Generally, Scotland is divided into five whisky-producing regions: Highlands, Lowlands, Campbeltown, Islay and Speyside. Some whisky aficionados also count the Scottish islands as a distinct region.
Speyside is the most densely-populated whisky-producing region in Scotland, with dozens of distilleries based in this relatively small patch and around the River Spey.
