Welcome to another instalment of Cigar History, a series of blogs written by the passionate team at Havana House! Today, we are looking at the 117 year history of the A. Turrent cigars. As well as the lineage behind Mexico’s largest tobacco operation.

A.Turrent Cigar History

Turrent cigars are known for their creation of more than a few brands which have been recognised as ‘exceptional’ and 90+ rated by reputable cigar publications. The brand is respected worldwide due to the great quality of the Mexican tobacco used on top of a great understanding of blending taste and strength. To achieve such a reputation in the cigar industry takes time, however. A. Turrent have been building their reputation for over a century through five generations.

Turrent cigars are a brand formed under the Nueva Matacapan de Tabacos company, which was founded by the legendary Alberto Turrent I and later renamed. The company is also responsible for the famous Te-Amo cigar brand as well as being the main producer of Maduro wrapper tobacco worldwide. The company has since been taken over by the American cigar giant Altadis, though the management of the company is still down to the Turrent family.

In the beginning, the Turrent family grew less than one percent of the amount of tobacco that they cultivate nowadays on their 2000 acre estate. Before the production of the Family’s own A. Turrent cigars, the tobacco was mainly used as wrapper leaf for various notable brands such as Montecristo, Padron and Macanudo to name but a few. The Turrent’s specially engineered San Adres Morron Maduro wrapper leaf is almost universally regarded as one of the finest wrapper in the world today.

Growth of the company was never exponential. ‘slow and steady’ are the words used by Alberto Turrent IV as he described the development of his company. The company has come to grow the best tobacco in Mexico, on the largest plantation due to perseverance and patience. Alejandro Turrent looks to continue to expand the family company.

Who is Alejandro Turrent?

Today, Alejandro Turrent is the president of A. Turrent cigars. A title handed down to him by his father, Alberto Turrent IV, who came after the first three. Alejandro’s first mission in the cigar industry was a somewhat informal one. While getting educated in Monterrey, the young aficionado was shocked by the lack of cigar connoisseurship in the area. On his own accord, he began visiting local shops, salesmen and merchants to teach them as to the pleasures of a fine cigar. Business has been booming in the area ever since!

After graduation, Alejandro began to work his father’s factory where he discovered the intricate details and family secrets behind every facet of cigar production and tobacco cultivation. From the nurturing of the tiny little seedlings to the final rolling process of a thick cigar.

Nowadays, the middle aged president of A. Turrent cigars is one of his generations most respected young cigar makers. His addition to the company is innovation. After years of following tradition, Alejandro is taking the company in a new direction, whilst following the consolation of his family of course. Some of A. Turrent’s latest cigar series are evidence of Alejandro’s creativity.

A. Turrent Product Range

In 2014, A. Turrent cigars made perhaps one of their boldest moves yet when they discontinued all cigar lines to make way for a new Casa Turrent brand. The latest line could be described as all the best attributes from all former cigar lines blended into one magnificent cigar. The Casa Turrent is a medium to full bodied cigar wrapped in the infamous Mexican Maduro wrapper.

The most recent creation from A. Turrent Cigars is the Tradicional Maduro series, which consists of three cigars. A Corona, a Robusto and a Toro, each just as delectable as the last. The cigars are also medium to full bodied in strength and packed with flavour. The hearty home-grown Mexican tobacco is wrapped in richly matured Maduro wrapper for a smoke that will leave your mouth-watering every time you recollect it.
