When you think of great western movies, it’s not only great cigars that are seen being lit up by the Cowboys; you often see a wily character sat out on deck, surveying the carnage and spitting, with great accuracy, into a metal pot.
This is chewing tobacco, albeit an early form, a smokeless tobacco that can also go by the name dip, snuff or chew and was made even more popular in America when baseball players began to use it in the early 1900’s and is just as popular today.
The process for chewing tobacco involves cutting the tobacco leaves into long strands which are then fermented and processed, with some sweetened with natural flavouring as well.
How it works
When chewing, the nicotine is absorbed through the mouth tissues, and once you start chewing and it’s being absorbed, the “chewer” will experience a significant head buzz.
The correct chewing process
Open your pack or tin, and check the moiosture of the chewing tobacco. The best way to determine the tobacco’s freshness is by checking its moisture.
In order to make the tobacco easier to grab, you should forcefully shake the container to compact the tobacco so, when you grab your chew, you won’t have any loose tobacco spilling out and going to waste. You can do this by banging on a hard surface a few times.
For newbies to chewing tobacco, ‘pinching your dip’ can lead to embarrassment among new acquaintances as the tobacco can end up everywhere, with you not knowing how much to use. A standard pinch for beginners is the amount you can pinch between your thumb and index finger.
Place the dip you’ve just pinched in between your lower lip and your teeth and always make sure the tobacco is packed tight because as this will limit the risk of any loose tobacco chew floating around your mouth, in your teeth, or even swallowing it!
Pack the chew with your tongue to make sure it’s secure.
Now that the tobacco chew is in your mouth work your lip up and down to produce more ‘juice’. Never, ever chew the dip, as its name foolishly suggests, chewing your tobacco will result in dizziness and sickness.
When your mouth has collected a fair amount of tobacco juice spit it into some kind of container like an empty water bottle or plastic container with a lid.
Keep all of your unused chewing tobacco in a cool place, such as a freezer or fridge as this will keep the tobacco from drying out.
