Cigar aficionados go to lengths to find the best tobacco, the right blend, and the purest smoke.

Whether they are enjoying a drag in an exotic destination, a luxury setting or in the comforts of their home, they want it to be of the best quality to really get the most out of their experience.

One place that is world renowned for its cigars has to be the Dominican Republic, with its tropical climate and fertile land making it an ideal location to produce the highest quality tobacco.

What is so special about cigars from the Dominican Republic?

The main reason why cigars from the Dominican Republic deserve respect is thanks to its lush terrain.

The soil is rich and plentiful, especially in areas such as the Yaque Valley. This coupled with year-round sunshine and just the right amount of rainfall means tobacco plants can flourish here.

This environment also creates tobacco leaves that have distinctive flavours, with a lot of variation, giving smokers plenty of choice between brands.

Another important factor that has helped propel the Dominican Republic to the top of the cigar leader board is that the nationalisation of Cuba in the 1960s led to many Cuban farmers migrating to the Caribbean island.

Since Cuba’s plantations became state-owned, they did not want to lose their business or opportunity, so took their skills to the Dominican Republic instead.

Their expertise benefited the tropical isle, with many Cuban farmers setting themselves up here and changing the focus of tobacco production.

Subsequently, tobacco from the Dominican Republic is seen to be as good in quality as cigars from Cuba.

What flavours can you expect from Dominican Republic cigars?

Due to the varying landscape, from tropical rainforests to mountainous peaks, there is not just one flavour of tobacco in the Dominican Republic.

Instead, you can find mild, medium and full-bodied flavours. Some are smooth and creamy, others are complex and rich.

It isn’t just the terrain that affects the taste, but also the tobacco production itself, however.

The Dominican Republic has been influenced by the Spanish, the Cubans, Americans and Africans over the years, with each culture lending their traditions, skills and craftsmanship to the process.

That is why you’ll find differences in the smoothness of Davidoff, the complexity in La Galera, and the detail of La Flor Dominicana.

These are just a few of the best brands from the Dominican Republic, with others including Ashton and La Aurora, the oldest tobacco manufacturer in the country.

Where is best to enjoy Dominican Republic cigars?

The short answer to this is the Dominican Republic itself. Not only are the products available in abundance, but smoking is allowed in most outdoor areas, as well as several designated indoor ones.

Seeing where they are produced, how they are manufactured, and the entire process from plant to shelf is really quite fascinating for a cigar enthusiast, helping tourists appreciate all the many factors involved in creating their favourite cigar and each peaceful, relaxing moment behind every smoke.

To see where tobacco is grown, holidaymakers should head to the Cibao Valley around Santiago, as the soil here is rich in nutrients. Other places worth visiting for their ideal environment are Valverde, Sanchez Ramirez, Monte Plata and Azua.

There are also plenty of opportunities to visit cigar factories, which give you an insight into how the leaves are turned into your favourite smokes.

Head to the ADVentura cigar factory Tabacalera Mina del Rey for a real education into cigar production. Labelled as the “heart of ADVentura Cigars”, this is where producers are “dedicated to cultivating excellence” so you can truly enjoy each puff.

Here you will see that cigars are not manufactured with speed, but produced individually, with love, care and precision. Cigarmakers in the factory are considered to be artisans, with the importance of precision, detail and focus passed down to them through generations.

That is why you can be certain that the cigars produced here are some of the best in the world, with paramount attention given to the cultivation of the crop and the picking of the leaves, all the way to the rolling of each cigar.

It is essential that tradition, authenticity and legacy continues in the Dominican Republic’s cigar industry, which is why all factories, both large and small, dedicate time, respect and excellence to each cigar they produce.

If you’re lucky enough to be visiting the Dominican Republic, you should also head to the island’s commercial street Calle el Conde. Here, you will be able to explore several smaller cigar factories and learn about the individual producers.

However, this will only serve to reinforce the message that as much consideration, patience, and expertise is given by the country’s leading brands, as they are from the island’s local cigar manufacturers.
