What Are Romeo y Julieta Cigars Like?

Romeo y Julieta cigars are medium in strength, with a slightly bitter taste along with some sweetness and the classic Cuban profile.

Among its rich and devoted customer base, there is one that truly stands out, Sir Winston Churchill. One of the brand’s flagship cigars is named in his honour; The Churchill is a long 7” by 47 ring gauge cigar.

The History of Romeo y Julieta Cigars

Taking its name from the Spanish translation of the Shakespearean tragedy, Romeo y Julieta was founded in 1875 by Manin Garcia and Inocencio Alvarez. The brand’s logo is adorned with gold medals, which symbolise the awards won at various tasting exhibitions.

The brand differentiated itself from competitors by offering its wealthier customers personalised bands for their cigars. This is very much thanks to the salesmanship of Jose “Pepin” Rodriguez Fernandez, who acquired the company in 1903.

Rodriquez travelled across Europe and the Americas extensively and used this as an opportunity to promote his cigar brand.

He passed away in 1954 at the age of 88. Following the Cuban Revolution and nationalisation of the cigar industry, Cubatabaco took over the production of Romeo y Julieta in Cuba, while the original owners set up a new home in the Dominican Republic, where they produce cigars for the United States.
