Beautiful tubed cigars at Havana House

When it comes to questions that we hear a lot, the one that probably gets asked the most at our shops is ‘why are those cigars in tubes?’

Originally, the tubes were made so that cigars could be packaged efficiently, without risking damage to the stogie and would also keep the cigar at optimum humidity levels through transport. Whilst the aluminium tube did originally serve its purpose; nowadays the cigar tube is packaged primarily as a marketing device.

Tubed cigars have an outstanding brand presence in any aficionado’s humidor, as well as making great gift sets, practical for taking away with you on a camping trip, outdoor activity or holiday. Additionally, cigar merchants who cannot always guarantee the optimum storage conditions, such as duty-free shops or newsagents, as they provide far better protection than small cardboard cigar packages.

If you have acquired some tubed cigars, at first, you’ll probably be a bit perplexed as to what to do with them.

A tubed cigar matures slower than a stogie that is lying unwrapped in a humidor, with almost no fresh air penetrating the tubed stogie, this means the aromas do not develop as quickly, and the cigar keeps its fragrance for longer. Meaning that if you buy a very strong cigar and leave it in the tube, it will take longer to mature. If you want to smoke it within two years, we suggest speeding up the development of aromas, which means storing the cigar sans tube.
